An article on Q13Fox, pointed out that this is the first change ever made to the city’s park rules since they were established 24 years ago, and the initiative to ban vaping along with smoking, came as a result of public outreach.
The importance of implementing regulations that are relative to risk
As vaping bans keep cropping up all across the US, and despite agreeing that young adults should not have access to deadly cigarettes, public health experts have long been pointing out that placing e-cigarettes on the same shelf as regular cigarettes and regulating them in the same way, could prove detrimental to public health.
It is a well known fact, that most smokers have their first cigarettes in their early teens, and e-cigarettes are proven to be the most effective smoking cessation tools available to date. Therefore it would make sense to have the devices available as smoking cessation aids for adolescents who are already struggling with a tobacco addiction.
Vapers should not be forced to use e-cigs in smoking areas
Additionally, following the study indicating that vaping is approximately 95% safer than smoking published in 2015, Public Health England (PHE), had issued guidelines in order to ensure that smokers who are transitioning from smoking to vaping, feel supported and encouraged to quit the deadly habit.
The PHE had insisted on the importance of setting up a special sections for vapers, as forcing them to use their vaporizers outside with smokers sends the wrong message and “undermines their effort to quit”.
